Posted March 11, 2009. In my opinion they look like a well worn pair of M1917 Field Shoes or 'Trench' Shoes. I've seen the U.S. made shoes with and without the reinforcing rivet on the sides. I believe the rivets were added when some of the shoes deficientcies became apparant after their arrival in Fance.
